A baby gym is often one of your little one's first play areas: a soft mat with an arch and a few toys hanging above. It looks simple, but there is a lot going on. Your baby looks, reaches, grabs, and playfully exercises their eyes, hands, and muscles. But from what age do you actually use a gym like this, and how do you get the most out of it?
When to start?
You can use a baby gym from the very first weeks. In the beginning, your baby will mostly lie on their back and look at the toys. Newborns can't see sharply yet, but contrasts and movement do catch their attention. Keep those first play sessions short: a few minutes is plenty, and stop as soon as your little one gets tired or fussy.
What happens at each age?
0 to 2 months: looking and following
Your baby will follow the toys with their eyes and react to your voice and face. Feel free to lie down next to them and talk about what they see.
2 to 4 months: reaching and grabbing
Their little hands are becoming more active. Your baby will start batting at the hanging toys and discover that they can make them move. This is a big step for their hand-eye coordination.
4 to 6 months: rolling and exploring
Many babies will start twisting and rolling around this time. Take the arch off now and then so your little one can move freely on the mat. This way, the gym grows along with your baby.
Tummy time on the baby gym
Lying on their tummy, also known as tummy time, helps your baby strengthen their neck, back, and shoulder muscles. A soft mat is a lovely place for this. Start with short sessions a few times a day, always when your baby is awake and you are with them. Get down to eye level or place a toy in front of them to make it much more fun.
Tip: does your baby find tummy time tricky? Try laying them on your own chest first while you lean back slightly. That counts as practice too, and they will feel safe with you.
What to look for when choosing one?
- A soft, padded mat, so your baby can lie comfortably.
- A detachable arch, allowing you to use the mat on its own as your little one grows.
- Interchangeable toys, for variety and new stimulation.
- Easy to store, so you can quickly take it along to their grandparents' house.
Our round 90 by 90 cm baby gym features a padded mat, a detachable play arch, and four soft hanging toys: a llama, a little cloud, a leaf, and a flower. It is designed for the first six months and makes a wonderful baby shower gift.
Playing safely
- Place the gym on the floor, never on a sofa or bed.
- Stay nearby and don't let your baby sleep on the play mat.
- Regularly check that the toys are still securely attached.

Frequently asked questions
How long can my baby lie under a baby gym?
Follow your baby's lead. In the beginning, a few minutes is enough; later on, they can stay longer. As soon as your little one gets tired or fussy, it's time for something else.
Up to what age do you use a baby gym?
Usually up to about six months, until your little one starts sitting and crawling. After that, the mat often still serves as a soft play area.
