Staying warm on the go: how to keep your baby cosy in the buggy

Zwarte universele voetenzak van Laavir voor buggy en kinderwagen

Short answerDress your little one in several thin layers, use a footmuff instead of loose blankets, and always pop on a hat when it's chilly. Check the back of their neck with your fingertips: if it feels warm, they're just right, but a sweaty neck means they're too hot.

An autumn or winter walk is wonderful: fresh air, getting out of the house, and many babies sleep really well outside too. But how do you make sure your little one is nice and warm, without overheating? With these tips, you can head out with peace of mind.

1. Dress your baby in layers

Multiple thin layers keep your baby warmer than one thick jumper, and it is easy to take something off when you go inside. A handy rule of thumb that many parents use: your baby wears one more layer than you do. Start with a bodysuit, then a babygrow or trousers with a jumper, and top it off with a coat or snowsuit for outside.

2. A footmuff instead of loose blankets

Blankets blow away, slide off little legs, and end up on the pavement. A footmuff stays perfectly in place. Your baby is tucked in cosily, while the buggy straps simply fit right through.

  • Windproof outer layer that keeps the cold out.
  • Soft, warm lining on the inside.
  • Harness openings for 3- and 5-point harnesses.
  • Zip and poppers, so you can open it quickly when it gets warmer indoors.

3. Head, hands, and feet

Babies lose a relatively large amount of heat through their heads. A hat is definitely not a luxury in cold weather. Mittens and warm socks or booties complete the outfit. Just make sure the hat doesn't slip over their eyes or nose.

4. Do the neck test

Cold hands don't tell you much: they are often a bit colder on babies. It is better to feel the back of their neck with the back of your fingers. If the neck feels pleasantly warm, they are perfectly fine. If your baby's neck is sweaty, they are too warm and you can remove a layer. If the neck feels cold, you can add a layer.

Tip: popping into a shop or visiting someone? Take off the hat and open the footmuff straight away. This prevents your baby from overheating, even if they are asleep.

5. Prefer babywearing?

For short distances, busy places, or stairs, a baby carrier is often more convenient than a buggy. Your baby also benefits from your body heat. A carrier made of soft teddy fabric is extra lovely during the colder months. Wear your coat over it, or choose a coat that is big enough for both of you. You can read more about choosing a baby carrier in choosing a baby carrier: how to find the one that suits you.

6. Protect against wind and rain

A rain cover and the buggy hood keep the wind and rain at bay. Do make sure your baby always gets enough fresh air, and never drape blankets or cloths over the buggy.

Frequently asked questions

From what temperature does my baby need a footmuff?

There is no strict rule. Many parents get the footmuff out as soon as it gets chilly in autumn. Keep a close eye on your baby and do the neck test regularly.

How do I wash the footmuff?

Our footmuff can be washed at 30 degrees on a gentle cycle. Always check the care label just to be sure.
