Short answerChoose a baby carrier that supports your baby's natural M-position, featuring wide, padded straps for your comfort. Always keep your baby's nose and mouth clear, ensure they don't overheat, and avoid using the carrier as a regular place for sleeping.

Your baby close to you, warm and secure, while you have your hands free. It is no wonder that more and more parents are using a baby carrier, both at home and on the go. But there are many types, and not every carrier suits every family. What should you look out for?

1. A good posture for your baby

The most important thing is a carrier that supports your baby's natural posture. This is often called the M-position: the knees slightly higher than the bottom, and the legs spread. The back can be slightly curved. A wide seat that reaches from the back of one knee to the other helps with this.

2. Comfort for you

You will easily carry your little one for an hour or more. Wide, padded shoulder straps and a sturdy waist belt distribute the weight across your body, reducing the strain on your back and shoulders. If the carrier is adjustable, both parents can use it.

3. Front or back?

In the first few months, you carry your baby on your front. This way, you can see their face and hear them breathe. When your little one is older and can support their head well, carrying on the back is a lovely option for longer walks. That is why it is best to choose a carrier that can do both.

4. The fabric: which season?

This is where the biggest difference between our two carriers lies.

Teddy: soft, fluffy and extra warm. Ideal for autumn and winter, or for parents who feel the cold easily. Suitable from birth up to around 15 kg.

Corduroy: soft, breathable and suitable for any season. A timeless choice in black, from 0 to 36 months.

Tip: unsure which one to choose? Think about when you will be carrying the most. Lots of walks in the cold: choose teddy. All year round, including indoors: choose corduroy.

Safe carrying: the five checks

  • Tight enough: your baby is held securely against you and does not slump down.
  • Always visible: you can see their face just by glancing down.
  • Close enough to kiss: you can kiss their head without leaning too far forward.
  • Chin off the chest: there is about a finger's width of space between their chin and chest, so they can breathe freely.
  • Supported back: their back is well supported in a natural position.

VeiligheidNL also advises taking your baby out of the carrier regularly so they can move freely, and not using the carrier as a permanent place to sleep. Always read the manual of your baby carrier carefully before using it for the first time.

Baby carrier or bouncer?

It is not an either/or choice. A baby carrier is ideal when your little one wants to be close to you or when you are out and about, while a bouncer is perfect when you need a safe spot nearby for a moment. Many parents use both at different times of the day.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my baby go in a carrier?

A carrier that is suitable from birth can be used straight away, as long as your baby is well supported and the carrier is adjusted correctly. Always check the minimum weight in the manual.

How long can you carry at one time?

This varies per baby and per parent. Alternate with other activities, and take breaks to let your little one move around and to give yourself a rest.
